Sony VAIO Pro SVP13213CXS This touchscreen notebook is the lightest I've ever used among Windows computers. Keyboard backlight works fine, screen is bright and glares not that much. Touchpad is great, I read some reviews about it being too hard to operate or something and I think those reviewers were lying. Touchscreen works great too. I think this notebook is too cheap given its quality. Also some reviewers noticed too much flex in its body but I didn't notice any. Probably those reviewers prefer heavyweight Apple notebooks, but I don't like heavy machines, given that amount of flex is roughly equal between this machine and MacBook Air. Sony VAIO Pro SVP13213CXS In any case, I found all the drawbacks stated in reviews to be fake, those reviewers just needed to pick on something. There's only advantages and no drawbacks in this beautiful machine, given it's low price (it's low considering what you'd get for it). Also looks much better than any MacBook.

ASUS 1015E-DS01-PK 10.1-Inch Laptop Review I like this muscled mini laptop since it arrived to my hand 3 days ago. Just what I was looking for: an updated to my 3 years lenovo S10e mini, at a reasonable price; plus 1 year international warranty. Faster RAM, LED displays, actual OS (win 8 64 bits), HDMI ouput and USB 3.0 Not only met my expectations it really surpassed these I was skeptical at first about this little thing but I am blown away. I own a few laptops including a last generation vaio. For what you pay here 250 bucks you get a really nice machine. I am running 3ds max with no issues in this thing.I saw some people writing in these reviews stuff like it can be better or whatever. its the perfect machine for this money. Its comparable to the ultrabook I have at speed and that's got a solid drive in it! I thought for sure I was going to replace the hard drive in this one with a solid but it is not necessary at all. Boot time is around 30 seconds . Windows 8 interface sucks but the os itself is way better than anything on the market extremely stable , I install classic shell and run it with a classic interface. As for the people who complain about this product spend a hundred more and get the 350 dollar ultrabook from asus for heaven's sake. the battery is as they say around 7 hours .Screen is excellent I seat outside on the patio and I can see it perfectly. the keyboard very responsive and adequate for your hands. The mouse pad is big enough and responds accordingly as in the instructions. the built is solid with a nice piano finish on top. It is not thick just perfect. The fan blows warm but if you know about computers celeron chips run a little hotter. but nothing weird. if you complain about that get yourself a laptop with an atom processor at less than half the speed. I bought a pink one for the wife today. Overall a fantastic product. Thumbs up to Asus

Samsung ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US 15.6-Inch Full HD Touchscreen Laptop Review I am not a computer specialist. Just a business person (photographer) who needed a new laptop and giving my own personal opinion on things I notice on this computer that I think is important to note before buying.

* Samsung ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US It doesn't have a optical drive (no CD/DVD port). I'm new to this so I cant judge if that's good or bad. It feels a bit frustrating for the money, but I'm sure its for the best and I'll get used to the new technology (soon as I find out what that is). I do have an external optical drive from when the one on my last laptop died, so I can still install my Lightroom and Photoshop (which Adobe doesn't sell my versions anymore so I need the disc to download) and other programs I have purchased in the past, (I am curious what people are doing do download their products, if you want, please share)

* the screen is wide, and short, (Wider but shorter than my last laptop) just like a plasma TV, but the image of your programs and internet are really small. Browser doesn't fill the screen by default in all situations, and there is a few inches space on each side of the screen your viewing, it's more like viewing a window that is just a 7" wide space in the middle of the screen, and 3" empty space on each side. Samsung ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US So it's more like like a 9.5" screen then a 15.6". And even when it is filling the screen, everything is very small (good thing I'm nearsighted or I'd need a magnification glass to see the works I'm typing right now. I am aware of hitting control and rolling my mouse wheel to enlarge but doesn't work on all screens)

Samsung ATIV Book 6 NP680Z5E-X01US It reminds me of when I was working on a MAC at work, just a little bit more difficult to hover your mouse over the button you need to push (I know this is touch screen but I wont be photo-editing with my fingers ;P ). I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I do tend to like bigger screen images and feel the space on the sides of the screen are a waste. (I took a picture and will add it to the image section)

I haven't had this computer 24 hours. I'll add to this as I find more things about it I feel note worthy. The idea of it so far is cool, but not sure it will fit MY needs. We shall see.

MSI GT Series GT70 0ND-491US Notebook Intel Core i7 3630QM Review Well built and very good specs on this laptop. Nice design and build quality. Gets 7.0 Windows experience by using the dedicated Nvidia 675 graphics card. Overall, a very good machine. Backlit keyboard. About the same weight as my 4.5 year old Toshiba with 16" monitor. Battery shows about 2.5 hours of life; have not tested that time though. MSI GT Series GT70 0ND-491US Very cool running machine. This laptop is so awesome. I helped my dad get a new laptop and helped him decided on something worth the investment. This baby will do it all. I just got around to playing Defiance on it last night and wow it just screams with power. And the all pretty led lights and non glare screen make it even better to play in the dark. Make sure to turn on the extra fan blowers and then swipe your finger across that turbo turn on. This thing is sweet.

Cons: Price but you get what you pay for. Would be nice to have the wireless card run on the 5 GHZ band, as I could take advantage of the extra powerful ASUS router that has 5G Wi-Fi. Keyboard key size will take getting used to for big fingered persons like me. I am still getting used to it so a grain of salt here.

Other Thoughts: If you can afford it, you cannot go wrong with this pc. Whether a gamer or just needing/wanting a high spec laptop, this is it.

Apple MacBook Air MD711LL/A As a student, I'm certain that this is one of the best laptops for me. It's lightweight, has great battery life, a reliable operating system, fantastic keyboard, and best-in-class trackpad.

Aside from an IPS panel, which would raise the price, I'm not left wanting anything more from this laptop. The low voltage CPU does a fine job at everyday stuff, and can even handle a little Counter Strike.

Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop PC Review Well, I purchased this at the Apple Store at Manhattan Beach, CA, and immediately upon opening the box, the Macbook Air had two small dings in the aluminum - one on the side of the monitor, and one that appeared to be small hole by the keyboard. Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A It was small but noticeable, so I returned it and got another that was in pristine condition. Any Apple executives out there reading this, please check out this store. I don't know if they're repackaging returned products or what but this was the second time I purchased something from there and had to return it because of some issue.

Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A The Macbook Air was a better choice for me over the Macbook Pro Retina (which I kept for three days and returned), and here's why - (1) better battery life (until they come out with the new Haswell Pro's)... you will get 12 hours at least if you're writing and doing light surfing or watching Youtube videos. If you turn off wifi and bluetooth, you may get more; (2) smaller and easier to carry, hold, etc. Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A (this factor might not sound much but it makes a huge difference and is probably the #1 reason why people love their Macbook Airs); (3) less expensive (which means I was less paranoid about it); (4) and for some reason, the screen doesn't hurt my eyes as much. It's strange but the Retina display hurts my eyes after a few hours. (5) the keyboard is great right out of the box so it's easier to type on than the Macbook Pro. I had to work on the Macbook Pro for 3 days before the keyboard was soft enough for me to type faster. Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A Also the fact that the laptop is shaped like a wedge also helps me type faster and is more comfortable for me to type on (Apple exec, please take notice of this for the Macbook Pro's).

Battery life is as good as advertised

 

Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop PC Review Ok I've had the MacBook Pro Retina and the latest version of the Air. This thing may not have the screen resolution of the Retina, but the battery lasts forever. I got this fully charged and turned on at 2pm and spent the day installing Microsoft Office and various other programs and media from my other machines. At 1030pm I was down to 54% battery. Today I've been on it the last few hours and its still down to the 40s.

Apple MacBook Air MD760LL/ The other features of the Macbook are good as expected but nothing ground breaking. I wouldn't switch up if you have a model thats pretty current. I can't tell a big difference in performance between this and my one from mid 2012 I got. I just switched because I travel a lot and want the extra battery for flights. The 13" model is definitely noticeably heavier than the 11" was, but nothing too crazy. Overall great machine and I can't begin to express how amazing the battery is on this thing.

6)Select "ScanDisk"

7)Now locate and select the drive you want to check (C:).

8)Check the "Standard" radio button.

9)Check the "Automatically Fix Errors"

10)Click "OK" to run.

How to use it in Windows 2000/XP/Vista

1)Close all programs before you begin.

2)Click on the "Start" button then "My Computer".

3)Right click on drive you wish to scan and then click on "Properties".

4)Now you click on the "Tools" tab at top of pop-up window.

5)Click on "Check Now" in the "Error Checking" section.

6)Check the "Automatically Fix Errors"

7)Click "OK" to run.

Testing Options in Windows 98/98SE/Me:

Standard: This option basically only checks files and folders for Windows system errors. This is good for routine maintenance checks.

Thorough: This option is not used often due to time constraints. Don't check "Thorough" unless you can let the machine run uninterrupted for several hours (2+ on larger drives) or overnight. I'm not kidding.

Thorough is used for when you are having severe hard drive issues only. When you have to check your drive for possible physical damage, check "Thorough" and then select, click "System and Data Areas"

Testing Options in Windows 2000/XP/Vista:

The "Standard" function in the older version is now the default. Just with click "Automatically Fix Errors"

To use a thorough scan to check for both system and physical errors, you should also check "Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors."

To run scandisk in Windows 2000/XP/Vista you have to have programs closed down, or you will keep getting a error message, "Disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive..." If this keeps happening then if possible restart your computer and press "F8" after PC the logo but before Windows starts. This will let you into Windows "Safe Mode". You can run ScanDisk now but be warned it will take twice as long but will give you the same results.

ScanDisk Test Results:

After processing you should get a pop-up window with the results of your test. The important to look for is "Bytes in bad sectors". This shows the number of bytes that have been marked bad or basically unusable for storage. It's normal to have a small number of bytes in bad sectors (less than 100,000). But more than this or an increased number over time is sign for keeping your file backups up to date and saving for that bigger, better hard drive.

Computer Repair Tips - Seven Early Warning Signs of a Hard Drive Crash

Like the late, great Mr. Asimov said, we shouldn't worry about computers taking over but be more concerned when they fail us and take all our important files with them. A computer's hard drive is the central storage within the system and its failure will bring all practical functions to a complete halt.

If your PC is experiencing any of the following signs of impeding doom then you must run (not walk) and grab CDs to burn backups of all your essential data.

Sign 1 - You hear high-pitched whining, loud clicking or grinding noises coming from the drive

A normally operating drive will make a smooth "whirling" sound as is spins up or down. But if a drive has a grinding or clicking sounds (the Read/Write heads scraping too close to the magnetic platters), then your drive is sick and is on the way out.

Sign 2 - You see the infamous "Blue Screen of Death", repeatedly

BSODs (Blue Screens of Death) are actually called "Stop" errors and they only appear when your Windows system is experiencing severe software or hardware issues. Often BSODs can cured with a careful "Repair Install" of the Windows operating system or by removal of a bad device driver. But if these software fast fixes don't seem stick, then your hard drive is usually on its last legs

Sign 3 - Your computer keeps re-booting on its own

I admit, I have only seen this problem a few times in my 18+ year career and in all instances it was due to hardware issues. Once it was a dust covered motherboard, and another time an overheating processor. But all the other times it was due to bad drives.

Sign 4 - Your system keeps having frequent freezes or hang ups

You are working along just fine, and then suddenly everything comes to a halt. The program freezes up on you. Your mouse and keyboard seem to stop responding. The only solution is to reboot.

Sign 5 - Error message: hard drive is not formatted

This a fun message that you will get when you start up your machine. You maybe able to restart and get it to boot into Windows a few more times but this error is "fur-sure" sign that you drive is very close to death. And by the way don't try to format the drive! You will lose all your data.

Sign 6 - Error message: boot drive or device not found or drive cannot be accessed

This is another favorite of mine. You can check the CD/DVD trays or the floppy drive to make sure no stray disks are stuck inside. You can also check the BIOS to make sure the system is booting from the hard drive first. If all these tests are no-good, then the drive is a goner.

Sign 7 - Errors: Operating system not found or Missing Operating System

This is a bad one. Even the Microsoft technical support knowledgebase has only got a few causes for this error message. Basically your PC can no longer detect the hard drive or the drive is too severely damaged to read (DOA).

What to do if your drive has any of these symptoms:

1)First, listen up, if possible, BACKUP YOUR FILES NOW!

2)Create a boot disk and run Windows Scandisk and set it to automatically fix errors. If it finds more than a few bad sectors then see the point above

3)If possible download and use a hard drive diagnostic program. All the major hard drive manufacturers have free utilities on their websites. Repair what you can and see point 1.

Computer Repair Tips - Broken Hard Drive? How to Recover Your Data Files

It's an accepted fact that hard drives are the weakest link in computer technology. The hard disk is where the operating system and all software applications are stored. Because of this, a properly working drive is essential in the operation of any computer.

But since these drives are basically just an electro-mechanical devices, and like any other machine they will eventually breakdown and fail.

And then oops, without backups, all your family photos, legal documents and important emails are gone!

There are three levels of data or file recovery for a dying or broken hard drive:

1) Basic Level: The drive is working (your can hear it spin up but it will not boot to Windows)

This usually means that some essential Windows files have been comprised or damaged in some way. With the right software you can view your files and even copy them. You have to choices...

Use a Rescue CD: You can grab a bootable CD with hard drive utility software already installed on it. You can then make repairs or copy your files from your bad drive to a replacement. A good name brand rescue CD for Windows is the "Ultimate Boot CD"

Move the Drive: If you don't have a way of burning a rescue CD and don't want to wait for a copy to shipped to you; you can always move your bad drive and place it in another working desktop PC. Once installed you should be able to view all your files on the drive from a secondary slot (normally where the CD or DVD drive live.)

2) Intermediate Level: The drive works but you can't see the files you want using the methods above.

Okay, things are not going good. You at this point have to get out the big guns. You will have to download and run a data recovery program such as "Active UNDELTE", "Recover My Files", etc. Both of these programs are powerful, reliable, and easy to use and won't cost you an arm or a leg to buy.

With Active UNDELETE you can also make a bootable CD to run on a PC if you can't move the drive to another computer. Both have technical support options if you need further help.

3) Advanced Level: You have tried everything above but you still can't find that Last Will from Aunt Sue...

At this point you have probably spent several hours (if not days) without your PC and invested just over a $100 in software if you used all of the above products. Now, is the time for you to decide to either use a professional level recovery application or throw in the towel and take your drive to a recovery specialist.

If you have the time but not a lot of cash (understand that hard drive recovery services can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars) then you can ratchet it up a notch and buy a copy of the home version of EasyRecovery from Ontrack. Ontrack is one of the leading data recovery companies in the world.

But if time is more critical and money is no obstacle then bite the bullet and take your drive to a local computer shop that does recovery work. Or if that is not possible then contact a big service like Ontrack and ship your hard drive to them.

Data recovery can be expensive no matter who does it, so to be on the safe side and make file backups frequently and fully.
